چکیده

1. Introduction Drought causes damage to agricultural production and affects the balance of food supply and demand. As Obasi (1994) mentioned, droughts had affected 50% of 2.8 billion people who suffered from weather-related disasters. Moreover, 1.3 million people have died due to the direct and indirect cause of drought during 1967–91. East and South East Asia has the largest population in the world, and it is also one of the largest agriculture-producing regions in the world. If drought occurs in this area, it will affect the balance of food supply and demand all over world. On the other hand, according to Gol'dsberg (1972) using information of vulnerability of major agricultural areas to drought based on the difference between annual precipitation and annual potential evaporation, the negative difference (210 to 2500 mm annually) areas are listed as the frequent intensive drought area. East Asia, especially China, is also one of the largest regions where the drought occurs easily in the world. It is very important to mitigate the damage caused by the drought. Since timely information of drought about its extent and intensity can help

An analysis of drought events for central plains of Iran through an employment of NOAA-AVHRR data

Drought is a major problematic phenomenon for the mostly semi-arid country of Iran. The north centralregions of Iran (north of Esfahan and Ghom province) have suffered from severe droughts several times duringthe last three decades. The frequent occurrence of drought in these regions is due to low and inconsistentprecipitation, abnormally high temperatures, increases in surface albedo and evapo...

Cross Comparison of Spot-4 Vegetation and Noaa-14 Avhrr

Spectral vegetation indices obtained from satellite sensors have been used to measure and monitor the Earth’s vegetative cover from local, regional, to global scales. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) has been the most widely-used index and shown to correlate with green leaf area index, green biomass, and net primary productivity. The NDVI from the two sensors, National Oceanic ...

Monitoring Meteorological Drought in Iran Using Remote Sensing and Drought Indices

Drought is a major environmental disaster in many parts of the world. Knowledge about the timing, severity and extentof drought can aid planning and decision-making. Drought indices derived from in-situ meteorological data have coarsespatial and temporal resolutions, thus, obtaining a real-time drought condition over a large area is difficult. This studyused advanced very high resolution radiom...

NOAA AVHRR NDVI/MODIS NDVI Predicts Potential to Forest Resource Management in Çatalca District of Turkey

Çatalca, located on the ridge between the Marmara and the Black Sea, is a rural district of Istanbul having the temperate climate. Landuse involves farming and forestry. This study makes a contribution and revises the applicability of two medium spatial resolution satellite sensors, NOAA AVHRR NDVI and MODIS (Terra) NDVI, for prediction to potential forest resource management in Çatalca distric...

Analysing vegetation changes in the Sahel using sensor data from Landsat and NOAA

* Corresponding author. Abstract – The semi-arid Sahel zone of Africa has suffered several periods of severe drought since about 1950. We have analyzed AVHRR Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) over the Sahel for the period 1982-2002, and found extensive areas of increasing NDVI. To verify these changes we have analyzed Landsat TM and ETM+ scenes from 1984-1986 and 1999-2001 for areas...
